Lec 4: Streams
Definition: a general input/output(IO) abstraction for C++
cout
and cin
They are known as the standard iostreams.

std::cout
is a output streamstd::cout
is an instance ofstd::ostream
which represents the standard output stream!

What streams actually are?
Input streams (I)
- a way to read data from a source
Output streams (O)
- a way to write data to a destination

Note:

ignores all leading spaces, and read the string from the first non-space char until the next char is space, and set thebeg
pointer to the next char.istream& getline(istream& is, string& str, char delim)
read the string from thebeg
pointer until the next char isdelim
. In this case, it set thebeg
pointer to the char next to the next char (i.e. next next char).
So, you SHOULDN'T use >>
and getline
together. Because they parse data differently.
To summarize

: ignores leading delims, read till next is delim, stop at the next delim.- (\ngood\n) read (good), stop at (\n)
- ( good\nboy) read (good), stop at (\n)
getline
doesn't ignore leading delims, read till next is delim, stop at the char next to next delim.- (\ngood\n) read (), stop at (g)
- ( good\nboy) read ( good), stop at (b)

std::cout
also has a intermediate buffer that stores the chars to be printed on the console.

Which means that the buffer of cout
is 1024 bytes (at least in my machine), and when it is about to add 257
into the buffer, the buffer is full, and it has to flush it to the console. And then the exception happens, and the remainders in the buffer is ignored.
Example: std::cerr
and std::clog
cerr
: used to output errors (unbuffered)
clog
: used for non-critical event logging (buffered)

std::fstream
also has a intermediate buffer that stores the chars to be printed on the console.
